Timeless Traditions

1876 The Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas opens its doors to students.

Ross Volunteers begins as the Scott Volunteers.

1883 Muster begins as a track and field day on June 26, quickly becoming a traditional gathering to relive stories of victory and defeat.

1888/9 The first Aggie Ring is received by the Class of 1889 although its design is very different from the ring worn today.

1894 E.C. Jones '94 redesigns the Aggie Ring for his class, a design that is still used today.

The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band is formed coinciding with the first Aggie football game.

1898 Silver Taps is first held honoring Lawrence Sullivan Ross, the former Governor of Texas and president of the college.

The Scott Volunteers are renamed Ross Volunteers in honor of Lawrence Sullivan Ross.

1903 Muster date changed to San Jacinto day, April 21.

1909 Bonfire is first built.

1913 Yell Practice begins as a post-dinner activity.

1914 Senior Boots start being worn by some cadets.

1922 E. King Gill answers the call to stand ready to help his team as the original 12th Man.

Muster tradition becomes official as a roll call for former students.

Freshmen from the Class of 1926 begin a mournful funeral march throughout campus that will be renewed in their senior year as the first Elephant Walk.

1925 Senior Boots are officially designated as part of the Senior Cadet uniform.

1930 The Gig 'em thumb signal is begun at a yell practice by Pinky Downs '06.

1931 Reveille I is brought to campus and becomes the first mascot.

Yell Practice is first held at midnight in preparation for the t.u. game.

1944 Reveille I dies January 18 and is given a formal military funeral and is buried facing the Kyle Field scoreboard as will be done for all subsequent Reveilles.

1951 The Memorial Student Center is dedicated on April 21 to all Aggies that gave their lives in war.

1964 The name is changed on the Aggie Ring to reflect the university's new name "Texas A&M University".

1982 The Big Event begins with six people cleaning a local cemetery.

1991 Replant begins with the planting of 400 trees.

1992 Junior E-Walk begins to celebrate the Junior class becoming leaders on campus.

1998 The first Maroon Out is credited with helping achieve a 28-21 victory over then-ranked #2 Nebraska.

1999 First Yell brings the Aggie family together for the first Midnight Yell of the school year to kick off the new year with a full weekend of activities.
